The worldwide leader in family entertainment is about to get a great deal more entertaining, as the Walt Disney Company agrees to acquire iconic comic book company Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion.
More than 5,000 iconic comic book characters will soon be in the hands of Disney, raising serious questions about the future of Marvel video game titles from Activision, Sega, THQ, and the upcoming MMO from Gazillion Entertainment. Under the terms of the agreement, Disney will pay Marvel shareholders $30 per share for their Marvel stock, plus .745 of a share of Disney stock for each share they own.
"This transaction combines Marvel's strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters including Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor with Disney's creative skills, unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties, and a business structure that maximizes the value of creative properties across multiple platforms and territories," said Robert A. Iger, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. "Ike Perlmutter and his team have done an impressive job of nurturing these properties and have created significant value. We are pleased to bring this talent and these great assets to Disney."
That's Disney's say on the matter, and here is Marvel's, from the official press release:
"Disney is the perfect home for Marvel's fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses," said Ike Perlmutter, Marvel's Chief Executive Officer. "This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney's tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world."
Both companies have approved the deal, though it still has to clear the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act and various regulatory committees before it can be finalized. Once finalized, Marvel's Perlmutter will continue to oversee Marvel's properties, working with Disney to help integrate the two properties across multiple lines of business.
We're staying on top of the situation, with calls out to Disney, Marvel, Activision, THQ, and Sega for comment on what effects this move will have on Marvel-based video game properties.

Irish cardinal renews attack on civil partnerships
The spiritual leader of Ireland's Roman Catholics has said that civil partnerships undermine marriage.
Cardinal Sean Brady has expressed his disapproval of partnerships before.
Civil partnerships are already legal in Northern Ireland and there is legislation before the Republic of Ireland's parliament to introduce them.
The Roman Cahtolic Church in Ireland has said it may support a legal challenge to new legislation.
In a sermon yesterday Cardinal Brady claimed Catholics, who make up 87% of the Republic's 4.4m population, would have to choose to "stand clearly on the side of Christ or depart from him."
He claimed civil partnerships "will remove 'marital status' from key legislation and public documentation and replace it with 'civil status', thus directly challenging the constitutional recognition that marriage is 'a moral institution possessing inalienable and imprescriptible rights, antecedent and superior to all positive law."
The Cardinal's comments were rejected by gay rights advocates in the Republic.
Brian Sheehan, director of the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network, told the BBC:
"I understand the fears of people who are afraid that civil partnership will undermine marriages.

A chihuahua with pink earrings was stolen from Brian Dortort at Georgie's Alibi, a gay bar in Wilton Manors, on July 28, and just now news is reaching the wires:
"Dotort threw a birthday party for a friend at the bar that night, and was carrying the dog in a specialty pet bag, he said. One of the dog's admirers insisted he hold the dog and grabbed her, he said. Dotort didn't suspect the dog would be stolen, he said, so he briefly left the dog in the man's possession to pick up litter from a nearby table. In an instant, the thief disappeared with Hudson, Dotort said. The dog, about the size of a softball, is described as light-cream colored with a pink belly and pink ears. She has a pink earring in each ear. Wilton Manors police investigated the theft and identified a suspect whose whereabouts are unknown, police spokesman David Jones said. It's up to the Broward State Attorney's Office to decide whether there's enough evidence for an arrest warrant to be issued, police said. Dortort described the thief as a thin man about 5 feet 10 inches tall. He weighs about 160 pounds, has short brown hair and tattoos, including one on his arm or neck that says 'Britney Spears.'"

A prized San Diego Zoo panda gave birth Wednesday to her fifth cub after a 130-day pregnancy. The cub born to 17-year-old Bai Yun became just the 14th panda in the United States, five of which are in San Diego.
I have 3 gigantic pandas and 20 friends in moi attic. They come down from time to time to say hello!!
